With the weather getting colder our skin can be itchy, red, and irritated.

Winter can be quite a sight, unfortunately can also be really harsh on our skin. Outdoors, the cold can leave your skin feeling dry, irritated, and itchy, while the indoors heaters remove the moisture from the air and from your skin.

Luckily, there are ways to combat dry skin during the cold Canadian winters:

Hot showers: It might seem like a good way to warm up, however hot water dries out your skin by stripping it of its natural oils.

Humidifier: Using a humidifier will add moisture to dry air, helping your skin to be hydrated.

Thermostat: Avoid raising the temperature indoors to more than 22°C, try to keep it between  20°C - 22°C ( 68°F - 72°F)

SKIN CARE REGIMEN

We want to share our personal favorite products for skincare. you are free to look for other options and tell us what works best for you!
1. Cleanser: Choose a cream based cleanser, these are mild and designed for dry, sensitive skin and have moisturizers built right in. Avoid gel and foaming cleansers as these can strip natural oils from your skin.
If you have oily skin, dry winter air may not affect you as severely.
You can use an oil cleanser to remove makeup and dissolve dirt without drying your skin.

Try precleanse, and Intensive moisture cleanser by Dermalogica
Winter moisturizer
2. Exfoliator: Change your physical exfoliator for a chemical one. Physical exfoliators that scrub the dead cell off can be too harsh for already vulnerable winter skin and result in damage or further dryness.
Chemical exfoliators are a formula that uses alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), or enzymes that gently dissolve the top layer of dead skin and wash it away, this is a much gentle method for dry skin.

Try the AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution by The ordinary if you have experience with acids or the Gentle cream exfoliator by Dermalogica.

3. Toner:  Apply moisturizing toners, there are many options for every skin type, this will add extra moisture and protection to your skin.

Try the Multi active toner or Antioxidant hydramist by Dermalogica

4.Serums: If you haven’t yet, start applying serums with hyaluronic acid that will grab moisture and hold it into your skin’s surface delivering lasting hydration. Apply it before the moisturizer.

Try Phyto replenish oil by Dermalogica
Winter serums
5. Eye cream: Fines lines can be formed easily when the skin is dry and dehydrated. Look for formulas that include collagen and elastin to fill out fine lines, peptides to support healthy tissue, and antioxidants for cell regeneration and also fight free radical damage.
Try Intensive eye repair by Dermalogica

6. Face moisturizer: You may consider applying one that contains fatty acids, hyaluronic acid and ceramides, which will help skin lock in moisture and maintain its protective barrier.
Try Barrier repair by Dermalogica and Cerave Skin renewing night cream.

Winter Moisturizer
7. SPF: Wear it everyday, even on cold, cloudy days, as there is significant reflection of UV rays that can easily cause sunburn, wrinkles and aging the skin.
Try Super sensitive shield SPF 30 by Dermalogica
Winter SPF
8. Lip balms: Cold weather may leave us with dry, chapped, or painfully cracked lips.Protect them by applying a rich, moisturizing balm to protect lips!

Try Vaseline lip therapy, they have many options

9. Body moisturizer: Our whole body will be affected during the cold season, and even more the exposed areas, it is really important to have a rich in fatty lipids moisturizer (like shea butter) As a tip apply the lotion straight out of the shower while your skin is still damp to lock in moisture, a lotion with hyaluronic acid will be very helpful too.

Try Cerave moisturizing lotion, or the Phyto replenish body oil and Body hydrating cream by Dermalogica.
